AR-15 Class January 2019 Registration

Through lecture, demonstration, and practical exercises this course introduces the shooter to the AR-15 style firearm and how to safety use it. 

Course Objectives:

 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the AR-15 Rifle’s capabilities, characteristics, and nomenclature; through verbal examination and demonstration.
  • Demonstrate safe firearm handling of the AR-15 Rifle through practical examination.
  • Demonstrate the employment and operation of the AR-15 Rifle to include proper sight use, loading/unloading procedures, and troubleshooting malfunctions through practical examination.
  • Demonstrate two firing positions of the AR-15 Rifle (standing and kneeling) and how to safely and effectively transition between them through practical examination.
  • Demonstrate the ability to properly maintain the AR-15 Rifle through basic disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, and reassembly.

 

This course is a basics to the AR-15 pattern of rifles, so no specific knowledge of the platform is required. However, basic safe gun handling and basic marksmanship of a rifle is required. 

Class will be conducted on January 20, 2019, from 9 am to 5 pm. Class is open to Club members and their guests. Club members will get priority over guests. Class will be held rain or shine. Cost for the class is $40 and covers Club fees, consumables, and RSO support. Classroom will be held in the Clubhouse, range session on Culver after lunch. 

Students are required to have the following minimum gear:

 

  • Basic range safety equipment (eyes and ears (electronic helpful))
  • Basic clothing for the weather (we will be outdoor on Culver for the range session)
  • 300 rounds of commercial manufacture .223 Remington or 5.56 mm NATO ammunition
  • Functional AR-15 rifle*, including
    • chambered in .223 Remington or 5.56 NATO only
    • iron sights or optic (red dot or 1-x magnified scope)
    • rifle sling
    • 3-4 20 or 30 round magazines
    • 1-2 magazine carriers (belt or chest, optional)
  • Rifle cleaning gear (optional; cleaning materials will be provided)
  • Water, snacks, bag lunch

 

* Note: If you do not have an AR pattern rifle, ammunition, magazines, etc., let us know and we can provide loaner equipment. Student will be responsible for any loss or damage due to negligence. Student will be responsible for covering ammunition costs. 

Course is sponsored by the Club Education Committee. 

Course instructor is Club member Timothy Florio. Tim Florio enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 2004 and served in 3rd Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team (FAST) for the majority of his time. After four deployments and eight years of service, Tim was honorably discharged and began to pursue a career in federal law enforcement. Since 2014 Tim has been a Police Officer within the Department of Defense and has been utilizing his military experience ever since. Tim Florio has co-authored his agencies Carbine Operators Course and served as a subject matter expert for the implementation of a Designated Marksman program. Tim is currently assigned to the Tactical Response Team (TRT) and also serves as a firearms instructor. 

Accomplishments Include:

 

  • Conducted foreign military training missions (teaching basic marksmanship and/or CQB)
  • Significant schools: USMC Advanced Urban Combat School, Army Special Reaction Team (SRT) School, FLETC Precision Rifle and Observer Program, US Govt. Precision Weapons Course
  • 1st Place in the 2016 NRA America’s Rifle Challenge Series (Iron Sight Division)

 

Course Assistant Instructor is Club member Tony Moller. Tony is the Club's IDPA Co-Match Director and Co-Education Chair. Tony is an NRA Training Counselor and Instructor with 12 years experience. He is certified in the following disciplines: Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Range Safety Officer, Personal Protection, Muzzleloading, Refuse to Be a Victim, and Home Firearm Safety. He is an NRA Certified Chief Range Safety Officer and an IDPA Certified Chief Range Safety Officer. Tony ran a Boy Scout Shooting Sports Venture Crew for 12 years.
